Welcome to the 9Honey Sleep Diaries where we get people to share their sleep habits. From what puts them to sleep to what ruins their sleep, everyone’s got a sleep story…
Next up we have Melbourne-based flight attendant Shani Turner who deserves a medal for looking every bit the polished flight attended despite a 3am wake up call.
What time do you start to wind down for bed?
I usually finish work at around 2-3pm, I go home and get dinner sorted for when my fiancé gets home so we can have dinner together, and I start winding down at about 6:30-7pm.
Do you have a pre-bed ritual?
I have a steaming hot shower and do my skincare routine, I can’t sleep without doing those things. I’m always using The Ordinary for my skincare.
What time do you get into bed?
I’m usually jumping into bed at about 7:30pm, so I can wind down fully with my love, we chat and share our stories from the day. With being a shift worker, spending quality time can be difficult so we really make the most of it when we can. Sometimes though, I get to bed later depending on what we are doing, but the latest I’ll get to bed before work is 10pm.
Who shares your bed?
It’s just me and my fiancé at the moment, we’re hoping to be sharing our king bed with a 4-legged, black nose, golden-coloured friend though.
What time do you wake up?
My shifts typically start at 5am, so I’m up at about 3am. It feels ungodly sometimes, I swear.

What disturbs your sleep?
Any lights, thankfully, we have black out blinds in our house.
What do you listen to?
If I’m really struggling to sleep, as cliché as it sounds, I listen to rain sounds on Spotify. Any rain/thunderstorm sounds on an ASMR playlist is great.
What’s your one tip to getting a good sleep?
Avoid having screen time at least 30 minutes before attempting to sleep.
What’s your sleep position?
Right-hand side sleeping, all the way.
What do you wear to bed?
I love my Qantas PJs, or any Christmas PJs from Peter Alexander.
What do you dream about?
I’ve been having weird dreams lately! I’ve been dreaming about house appliances as of late, but I often dream about my future wedding, or about the passenger I forgot to get a glass of water for that day.
Do you take anything to help you sleep better?
I usually take magnesium before bed as it aids in muscle recovery from the gym, but sometimes I take a natural supplement that can help with anxiety and irritability.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
The sweet smell of coffee at 3am, and also thinking about the fact I have an incredible job to get to.
Do you set an alarm?
I set about five alarms for my 3am wake ups that are about 2 minutes apart… I’m scared I will sleep through, especially if I’m overly tired the night before
Do you snooze?
No, I don’t snooze, I do worse, I just turn off my alarms, which is why I set at least five alarms the night before!
